Welcome to The Finch Farm

Nutritional Requirements for Gouldians

Feed a fortified finch mix daily. Supply fresh water daily.
Very Important: If you are using water tubes or water troughs, provide an open water dish for the first several days so birds can find water easily. Dehydration is the leading cause of new bird fatalities.
I do not recommend grit. I provide crushed oyster shells instead. This is a good source of calcium. Egg food should be given at least 3 times a week. The egg food recipe below has all the vitamins and minerals a growing bird needs. Gouldians also need a small supply of charcoal to help with crop problems. Millet Sprays should be given at least 2 times a week. Occasionally supply green food such as dandelion greens, romaine lettuce or broccoli heads. Give all soft foods in the morning so they have a longer chance to eat while fresh.

Egg Food Recipe

Hard boil eggs. Let them cool.

Puree whole eggs with shells in food processor.

Put egg puree in freezer bag and freeze. (Freezing releases much of the water contained within the eggs.)

Thaw puree. Using cheesecloth, ring the water out of the puree. (It is important to remove as much water as possible.)

In food processor, mix strained eggs with Exact hand feeding formula. (About two parts egg to one part dry formula.)

The final product should be a little moist, but not wet. It should crumble easily. It can be stored in refrigerator for three to five days.
